Important Upcoming Change to Subspecialty Certification
The successful and well received Continuing Urologic Certification (CUC) program is now endorsed for ABU Urogynecology and Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery (URPS) and Pediatric Urology subspecialty Diplomates. If approved by ABMS as anticipated, all Diplomates holding subspecialty certification will roll into the CUC program beginning in 2027.
How does this immediately impact you?
If your certificate expires in 2027, you must still take the recertification exam this year to remain certified. Though your certificate will be extended to 2037, you will still be required to participate in CUC once it is approved.
If your certificate expires in 2028 or 2029, you can elect to take the recertification exam this year. However, by awaiting its 2027 expected commencement CUC will renew your certification year by year without need to take the exam in a secure testing center.
If your certificate expires in 2030 or later, you are not yet impacted and should continue with any Lifelong Learning Level 1 requirements assigned to you until CUC is adopted.
CUC is a continuous, low-stakes longitudinal learning process There will no longer be a secure 10-year exam or need to complete the Practice Assessment Protocols (PAP). The secure exam is replaced with the continuous and alternating learning activities of Knowledge Exposure, Knowledge Reinforcement and Knowledge Assessment as indicated in blue on the table below. All learning activities are open resource, undertaken in your preferred environment on a personal computer and at a time of your choosing.
Once CUC starts for URPS and Pediatric Urology, newly certified subspecialty Diplomates will no longer have an expiration date on their certificate. All current subspecialty Diplomates, regardless of certificate expiration date will be required to participate in continuing certification to maintain good standing of the certificate. Your online certification status, which is publicly available through the ABU and ABMS websites, will indicate both certification status and CUC compliance.
